Reasons to Embrace Your Natural Afro Hair

There are plenty of reasons to love your natural afro hair and curls. Caring for natural hair can sometimes be frustrating just like caring for any other hair texture, but once you learn how to maintain it and care for it properly you’ll be on your way to falling head over heels in love with your natural hair. Naturally kinky, curly, and Afro-textured hair has very distinct characteristics. So much so that it will leave others staring in awe and even asking to touch your delicate mane.
We love our natural curl patterns so we decided to compile a list of  reasons to embrace and love your natural hair today.

Enjoy the versatility of natural hair styles.

One of the most extravagant things about natural hair is the endless styling possibilities. Whether it’s a braid-out, twist-out, Bantu knots, styled straight or if you’re wearing natural hair extensions there is no limit to what you can do with your natural hair. Naturally kinky, curly, and Afro-textured hair types are the absolute most versatile hair types in the world. Your hair can hold styles that other textures cannot such as intricate braiding patterns, Afro puffs, curly hair styles, waves, heat styles, hair extensions, twists, and more.

Grow a stronger and thicker crown.

There are in fact some women that have no issues with growing their hair while relaxed but most women who have transitioned to wearing their natural hair are surprised when their hair reaches lengths they’ve never achieved before. African-American hair textures are extremely fragile and when you add relaxers and various chemical treatments to the mix, it can lead to damage and stunted hair growth. Your natural strands will grow stronger, thicker, and longer without the interference of harsh and toxic chemicals stunting your hair growth.

Finally embrace new growth.

New growth is something that is treasured in the natural hair community because it shows that your hair is actively growing. Long gone are the days of worrying about the emergence of new growth. Naturals have very little to no concerns when it comes to new growth hairs because the texture is the same as the hair that is already on your head.

Natural hair is low maintenance (sort of).

Maintaining natural hair may not be a piece of cake, but it certainly is easy to maintain with the proper care and know how. Just like any hair texture, your hair will require regular maintenance and the right hair care regimen so that is can grow healthy and strong. A simple natural hair care regimen will involve cleansing the hair, conditioning or deep conditioning, sealing moisture in your hair, and styling. Your natural hair care regimen couldn’t get any easier. The key to caring for your natural hair is finding the right products that work with your specific hair type and its needs.

Confident in your hair's health.

Chemical relaxers can permanently alter the structure of your hair and weaken the hair shaft leading to dehydrated hair, excessive breakage, and split ends. Natural hair needs moisture even to manipulate and style it. Without taking the necessary steps in caring for your natural hair, it can start to look dull and lackluster in appearance. Eliminating relaxers and other chemical hair treatments will leave your hair in a much healthier state.

Natural hair can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Not only will you find yourself reading the labels on the products that you put on your body, but you will naturally start reading the labels of everything that you put into your body as well. Once you start researching certain ingredients that are used in your hair products you will then start to take notice of the ingredients being used in your foods. You may find yourself working out more of course because that whole fear of “sweating out your hair” is eliminated with natural hair.

Connection with your culture.

There’s no doubt that wearing your naturally kinky, curly, and Afro-textured hair gives you a sense of pride in your identity as a woman with African roots. Afros and afro hairstyles have played a role in political views and stood as a symbol of black pride for decades and continues to do so.

Achieve longer hair lengths.

Isn’t it funny how your natural hair can be 20 inches long and still look like a teeny weenie Afro? Shrinkage is something that should be embraced, especially since type 4 natural hair types can shrink up to 75 percent of its true length. Your hair texture is so unique that you can wear it stretched and long or short without having to pick up the scissors. Whether you decide to stretch it out using curlers, a blow dryer, or the flat iron, don’t be surprised if people ask, “Is that all your real hair?”

Eliminate the fear of “getting your hair wet”.

Most women with relaxed or chemically processed hair hate getting their hair wet because it can cause the hair to revert back to its curly stage. The beauty of wearing your natural hair is that you don’t have to run at every little sign of rain. Of course, you don’t want to ruin your clothes in the middle of a rainstorm but a little light rain won’t cause any damage to your natural hair. In fact, rain water only helps to add more moisture to your hair. Water is the best ingredient for hydrating natural hair not to mention it will cost you absolutely nothing.

Enjoy the benefits of having voluminous hair.

The beauty of natural hair is that it grows voluminous and can stand at great heights. Naturals don’t usually have a problem with attaining volume. Even when heat styling, you’ll notice that your natural hair still has a lot of body and bounce.

common mistakes made when caring for Natural Afro hair

1) Not wrapping hair in a silk scarf

"If you don't wrap your hair before you go to bed, while you're asleep the pillow will absorb the moisture from your hair and come morning it will appear dry, leading you to apply more products and heat in an attempt to banish frizz."
Solution: "Wrap hair in a silk scarf. This will help ensure the moisture is retained, so you're less likely to need to resort to heated appliances and extra product because your hair will already be beautifully hydrated."

2) Washing hair in hot water

"Piping hot water dries out the hair and strips away moisture."
Solution: "Washing tresses in warm water will still cleanse them effectively, plus it will help seal and be much more gentle on the cuticle, resulting in a happier head of hair."

3) Not having regular treatments

"Afro and curly textures can struggle in the cold weather. What's more, central heating can dry out the hair, leaving it dull and dehydrated."
Solution: "It's so important to apply a treatment every two weeks to rehydrate, strengthen, protect and maintain hair health. A rich oil in-salon treatment such as my signature Manketti Treatment is ideal."
"In between professional in-salon treatments, apply AVEDA Dry Remedy Moisturising Masque to cleansed hair at home, then pop on the HEAT-TREAT Thermal Hair Conditioning Cap for two minutes. When warmed in the microwave before placing over the hair, the heat from the cap results in an adsorption rate of over 4 times what can be achieved at room temperature, helping to transform frizzy hair into shinier tresses."

4) Blow-drying and ironing the hair too frequently

"Constant blow-drying and ironing can damage cuticles, split the strands and dry out the hair."
Solution: "Rather than blow-drying and tonging, try roller setting instead. As this involves less direct heat being applied to the hair, this option is a kinder way of getting hair smooth. And remember, whenever you're heat-styling your hair, always use protection first by applying a product such as the MIZANI Thermastrength Heat-Protecting Style Serum or AVEDA Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener to help guard against damage."

5) Not getting regular trims

"As tempting as it may be to hold on to the length, it can do more harm than good. The ends of your hair are old and have been subjected to brushing and heat so if you don't trim them away, it won't style well. What's more, once the ends start to split, it travels up to mid-lengths causing the damage to spread."
Solution: "If you want your hair to style, curl and hold better, have trims every six weeks. Once the damaged hair is removed, it will look and feel so much healthier."

6) Not adding enough moisture

"Afro and mixed-race hair needs regular moisture to be added - especially during the colder months."
Solution: "Just as you moisturise your skin try applying a good hydrating product like the MIZANI Butter Rich Deep Nourishing Hairdress daily to prevent hair drying out. Don't overload the hair with product though – just use a little bit more than you would during the summer. Two-three times a week apply a small amount of MIZANI H20 Intense Night-Time Treatment and wrap hair in a silk scarf before bed for added hydration."

7) Having too many chemical treatments

"Excessive use of chemical treatments can dry the hair and incorrect application can cause damage."
Solution: "Always have relaxers and colours applied professionally at a reputable salon. Rather than having six or seven relaxers throughout the year, try stretching out the frequency of application, for example, by having three or four but having steam treatments in between. An in-salon service such as MIZANI Fiberfyl will help soften the regrowth, prevent breakage, plus strengthen."

8) Using the wrong hair bands

"With the blustery weather conditions at this time of year, it's tempting to quickly tie hair back away from the wind and rain. However, using elastic or plastic bands will pull on the hair resulting in damaged cuticles, friction and stress."
Solution: "Use bands covered in silk or satin. The smooth surface will help protect from breakage and damage, resulting in happier hair days whatever the weather."

When it comes to hair loss and baldness, the progress is slow, but it is definitely there. Be patient, and you will definitely notice a difference when you use the above remedies. Here are some other methods to prevent and treat baldness.

Other Ways To Treat Baldness

(i) Diet For Baldness

To maintain the health of your hair, you need to avoid certain unhygienic and junk foods as they decelerate hair growth. Drinking sufficient quantity of water and keeping oneself hydrated are the best ways to prevent hair loss. Include enough portions of the foods mentioned below in your regular diet.
  • Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits and guava.
  • Lean meat, chicken, and fish (to supply enough protein to the hair follicles).
  • Vitamin A and beta-carotene containing foods like green leafy vegetables, broccoli, squash, melon, and apricots.
  • Foods rich in silica like strawberries, red peppers, wheat, barley, oats, rice, and beans.
  • Milk, yogurt, and eggs.
This healthy diet will not only improve your overall health but also contribute to a healthy scalp.

(ii) Vitamins For Baldness

Vitamins A, B, C, and E are essential for healthy hair growth. They maintain healthy circulation of blood while providing the required nutrients and precursors for hair growth. The hair follicles remain in optimum health, and your scalp will be covered in a healthy growth of thick hair. Deficiencies in these vitamins have been associated with hair loss, so it is essential to maintain a diet with enough amount of these vitamins (26). Some examples of diet additions have been mentioned already. You can also opt for vitamin supplements, but before you do, confirm the appropriate dosage from a medical practitioner.

(iii) Leech Therapy For Baldness

Ayurveda employs an alternative medicine therapy involving the usage of leeches to suck blood on the scalp, thus improving circulation. This helps to cover the bald spots with fresh hair growth (27). This technique should only be administered by a trained professional. Consult your local alternative medicine specialist to know more details about this procedure.

(iv) Acupuncture For Baldness

Acupuncture, a Chinese medical practice, involves activating the trigger points in your mind that will establish a balance in the body fluids and energies and resolve the problem. For baldness, there are many acupuncture points that are activated. This treatment is usually used in conjunction with a herbal remedy and vitamin supplementation.
Caution
Do not attempt acupuncture by yourself. Avail the services of a trained professional for safe treatment.

(v) Laser Treatment For Baldness

Low laser light therapy is available at cosmetic clinics to promote hair regrowth and cover bald spots on the scalps. It is an expensive procedure, and there are many experts in the field who are not convinced of its efficacy. If you wish to go for this procedure to treat your baldness, do thorough research and then take a decision. Go to a reputed clinic and get the best advice.
These were the alternative ways to get rid of baldness. Follow these tips along with a healthy diet and supplement intake to prevent premature baldness.

How To Prevent Baldness

  • Combing your hair is necessary, but combing it too often can weaken the hair follicles and can result in hair loss. So, refrain from excessive combing.
  • Hot water can weaken the hair follicles, which results in thinning of the hair. Use cool or normal temperature water to rinse your hair.
  • Use herbal or organic shampoos that do not contain chemical additives that can damage your hair follicles.
  • Massage your scalp regularly with oil to promote circulation and keep the scalp nourished with all vital nutrients.

Can A Woman Have Male Pattern Baldness?

Only men are affected by male pattern baldness. However, when a similar kind of excessive hair loss is seen in women, it is known as female pattern baldness. Its exact cause is unclear, but like male pattern baldness, hormones are said to be involved.
Hair loss is a devastating condition that affects millions of men and women around the world. Home remedies can be used without any worry as they do not have any adverse effects at all. And they are easily available in the kitchen and/or a nearby market. You need not drill a hole in your budget to treat baldness. These cheap home remedies for baldness can do the trick.
